February 3 (Renewables Now) - Brazilian water and waste treatment company Sabesp (BVMF:SBSP3) has put into operations a 1MW distributed generation (DG) solar array in Sao Paulo's Orindiuva town.

Sabesp's new asset is the first under its DG photovoltaic (PV) programme, aimed at reducing the firm's costs by using renewable sources.

The PV plant is capable of generating 1.9 million kWh per year, enough to meet the consumption of 780 homes, the local government said on Tuesday.

Overall, the sanitation utility intends to install 33 PV systems adjacent to its facilities, mainly in the countryside of Sao Paulo state. With capacities ranging from 1 MW to 4 MW, the solar farms will have a combined capacity of approximately 73 MWp.

The solar DG programme calls for investments of around BRL 250 million (USD 46.6m/EUR 38.7m), to be financed by IDB Invest, the private sector arm of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The energy generated through this initiative will supply 4.5% of Sabesp's electrical needs or 60% of all power consumed in low voltage by the company.
